Abstract
The effect of air pollution on limestone buildings, especially those of historical significance, has given rise to increasing concern in recent years. In response to this concern a study is being made of Lincoln Cathedral in Eastern England. The building is largely constructed of limestone which is at present undergoing restoration. Although the city is in a rural setting the Cathedral overlooks the coal-fired power stations of the Trent Valley, about 20km to the west and north-west. The degraded stonework on the West Front has been closely studied and samples of fresh and degraded stone removed for laboratory study. Blistering of the stone is common on many surfaces and in sheltered areas blackened crusts have lead to some obliteration of the oolitic texture by gypsum crystals. In an attempt to separate out the long term effects of material weathering from the historical effects of pollution attack and the more recent effects of industrial pollution, samples of new building materials have been exposed on the Cathedral. Atmospheric pollutant concentrations and meteorological conditions are being measured by continuous analysis equipment, supplemented by data from the nearby Meteorological Office Station.
