Extremely minute concentrations of metals or metal compounds in such diversified substances as piston rings for tiny internal combustion engines developed for moon-space vehicles, simple insulating materials, or petroleum catalysts can wreak havoc for the research scientist; to his aid, however, comes the atomic absorption technique, which is at once an important supplement and powerful rival to the established means of measuring the concentration of metals in materials.
