Abstract
The question is: why masonry is afflicted by rising damp, and why so many different means of dealing with it, do really (not always, but often) function as expected. Applying new insights into thermodynamics of open system makes clear: a tendency for ever growing rates of entropy production is promoting a process of self structuring, inevitably turning moisture-fed masonry into a rather efficient water pump. -- AATA
