Abstract
Hot-water, sodium hydroxide and alcohol-benzene extractives, holocellulose, lignin, pentosan, and alpha-cellulose were determined in heartwood and sapwood samples of decayed and sound <i>Chamaecyparis formosensis</i>. The pulp yield (by sulfate process) of decayed wood was slightly lower and physical properties were poorer than those of sound wood. Compressive bond strength in shear block tests of decayed wood glued with urea formaldehyde and resorcinal formaldehyde were slightly higher than those of sound wood, but wood failure was lower. There was no significant difference between sound and decayed wood in bonding strengths of poly(vinyl acetate). -- AATA
