Abstract
Good gluing characteristics are intimately related to surface wettability. In a study to investigate the gluing of maritime pine, veneer samples were supported on a frame in a glass tank over solutions that gave relative humidity values of 3, 8.5, 12.5, or 15%. Wettability of the veneers was assessed by measuring the contact angles made by a drop of urea formaldehyde resin. A low contact angle signifies good wettability and thus good gluing characteristics. Earlywood and latewood were tested separately. The results show that wettability is improved by an increase in humidity. Contact angles are less on earlywood than on latewood. As humidity increases the difference between the wettabilities of earlywood and latewood tends to diminish. Changes in contact angles with time are described for 3% and 8.5% moisture content. -- AATA
