Abstract
The technique of applied brocade on paintings and sculptures was widespread in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. Numerous examples of this technique are found in Spain and in the Basque region of Gipuzkoa in particular. There is a lack of documentation and research on the subject. A protocol was created in order to study the application of this technique in Gipuzkoa systematically. The analysis of applied brocades from six early 16th century altarpieces allowed for a classification of typologies, techniques and materials.
