Abstract
This article considers the conservation of the remarkable Transylvanian glass icon collection of the ASTRA Museum in Sibiu, Romania. A multidisciplinary team, coordinated by specialists in the Conservation Department, developed a strategy for the study and conservation of these reverse painting on glass icons in order to enhance access to the collection, both for specialists and the public. The strategy aims to evaluate the condition of the icons, establish a framework for determining conservation priorities, and provide a means to bring together and disseminate knowledge and documentation of the collection through digitization. It outlines the present knowledge about the materials and techniques of these icons and their specific degradations and presents the different types of restoration operations performed on glass icons, underlining the benefits of using egg yolk as consolidant and cleaning material.
