Abstract
The oldest mention of relining dates back to the 17th century and till date a number of methods have been developed for the same. The adhesive is being used from the beginning, white lead or wax was mainly used in the 19th century while the synthetic adhesives are being used since the late 1960s in France. The latest adhesives polyvinyl acetate deteriorate and damage the original materials of the paintings. Thus the current methods are limited to use of solvents or a scalpel, many innovative methods like laser technology and nanotechnology have been tested as per the surface appearance and the physio-chemical repercussions induced by each one of these. The results obtained have been observed or analyzed under optical microscope, laser beam scanning electronic microscope, in IRTF (ATR) and also by thermogravimetry.
