Abstract
As is well known, the starch paste has long been important for mounting Chinese painting and calligraphy and for use to stiffening paper. The starch is a permanent materials as regards resistance to autoxidation. The successful mounting demonstrated the advantages of paste that has been aged for a number of years. Still maintain the mounted scroll sufficiently flexible. Modified starch paste has been used for a long history. During the Tang Dynasty, about one thousand years ago, the preparing of modified paste had already been described in the historical reference of Lidai Ming-hua-ji (The Records of Famous Paintings through the Ages). Since then a number of additives were presumably added to the starch as preservative or adhesive. Among them, the alum is normally to be recommended, the another one is the extract of the root of a Chinese medicine Bletilla strita (Thunb.) Reichb. This material, known as bai-ji, can be used itself to make an adhesive added to mounter’s paste, it was considered to increase the paste’s adhesive strength to make better sticking between the paper backing and the painting. With the course of time, the modified starch paste gets harder and brittler, hardly swells in water. Once the old Chinese paintings and calligraphy need to restore, the paintings had to be separated from the supported paper, but the aged starch paste which contained alum and bai-ji stuck tightly between them. At that time if the inner supporting paper is too thin, the separating step will be very difficult. In the traditional Chinese mounting method, the only way is adopted with moist hot towel to try soften and dissolving the aged starch, then scrapped with fingers carefully, small piece and small piece to remove the supporting paper. Vecause the aged modified starch paste is impossible to be dissolved totally, it is easy to damage the painting, and consume much time. The starch digesting enzyme, [alpha]-amylase, is very useful for decomposing such starch paste. As well as the swelling and softening of the adhesive caused by the penetration of moisture, the enzyme effectively catalyses the decomposition of the hardened adhesive, converting it to a watersoluble form. As catalysts, enzymes remain unchanged throughout the catalysed reaction and therefore remain available for many rounds of catalysis use. Extremely small amount of enzyme is sufficient for effective catalysis of a biochemical reaction, as long as the optimal aqueous environment is used. An advantage of enzymatic reactions is that there are no additional reaction products, other than degradation products of the substrate. In contrast to many chemical reactions, enzymatic catalysed reaction are so-called clean systems. In case of starch degradation only oligosaccharides or maltose molecules. Under suitable treatment conditions the enzyme residues in the paper can be lowered to a negligible level. It has demonstrated that the [alpha]-amylase is a powerful tool and required time for adhesive removal ranged from 60-90 min. In order to avoid any risk of undesired side effects on the treated objects, caused by unknown impurities resulting from the application of crude enzymes, products of the highest possible purity is necessary.
