Bleaching and use of additives are the two techniques used to control the degree of brightness in paper. There are several bleaching methods and they are used to improve in other ways than brightening, e.g. increasing chemical purity and stability. Fillers, coating pigments, optical brighteners and fluorescent dyes are additives used to achieve optimum brightness. -- AATA
