The Triumph of Christ, a 16th century Brussels' tapestry known as the Mazarin tapestry, was recently restored at the National Gallery of Art. It took three years to complete the work which included washing, reweaving old tears, replacing old restorations and attaching a backing and strips for hanging. Treatment was complicated by the mixture in the tapestry of wool, silk and metal yarns and the necessity of dying yarns, using lightfast Ciba Benzyl acid dyes, in order for the restorations to match the original colors. The author also describes a washing tub he constracted and the rollers he used to hold the tapestry while he did the restoration. (See also <i>AATA 10-694). -- AATA
