Abstract
The recently restored church of St. Maarten at Zaltbommel in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands, posses two series of figural sculptures, four bosses in the choir and eight corbels in the so-called Van Balveren chapel. In the literature on medieval sculpture in the Netherlands these sculptures are mostly neglected and if they are mentioned at all the iconographically interpretation is beside the mark. Here they are extensively described both stylistically and iconographically. The sculptures appear to be good average regional work of about 1400 and of about 1470 respectively. The four bosses depict the Man of Sorrows, Mary with Child, St. Laurence and St. Antony of Egypt, the latter two saints being figures of special importance for the canons of the church. The eight corbels show prophets with musical instruments, among whom Habakkuk, Jonah (or Sophoniah), Moses (with the two tables),David and Daniel.
