A short paper describes the problem of the detection of modern forgeries of Spanish silver reales minted in South America. X-ray fluorescence analysis and examination of surface enrichment were unable to distinguish the modern replicas from genuine coins with complete confidence, but an examination of grain size by means of x-ray diffraction analysis successfully differentiated between the two. -- AATA
