Abstract
The problem of preventing silver from tarnishing by use of varnishes is considered. Three kinds of varnishes are examined: nitrocelluloses, methacrylates, and poly(vinyl acetates). Their physical properties are compared before as well as after artificial ageing. Paraloid B 72 or a poly(vinyl acetate) (such as AYAF) is recommended for indoor protection. If silver objects have to be exposed under less favorable atmospheric conditions, the poly(vinyl acetates) will give better results.
