Abstract
Continuing his investigation of reproduction techniques for exterior sculpture (see AATA 19-1786), the author evaluates the justification for carving copies rather than making replicaswith molds. Carved copies are appropriate for statuary which is firmly bound to the architectural setting; fragmentary statuary can hardly be tolerated here. (Of course, missing paints can be completed before making the mold when one is using a casting procedure.) The sculptor's talents may also be used to advantage for sculptures that are badly corroded or that survive as disconnected pieces. -- AATA
