Abstract
The need to find safe, long term disposal for nuclear wastes has caused scientists to study how ancient glasses have survived for thousands of years. After examining the most common forms of glass deterioration -- weeping, crizzling, pitting, layering and crusting -- and the effects of environmental factors on ancient glass, scientists are designing borosilicate glass containers to be part of a multibarrier unit that would be buried hundreds of feet underground, to hold nuclear wastes. -- AATA
