Abstract
From ca 1735 onwards, considerable numbers of European engravings were sent to China for copying onto Chinese porcelain. This style of ceramic decoration continued until ca 1825, but reached its height of popularity from 1740 to 1760. Howard's article discusses forgeries of this mode of decoration produced by a Milanese art dealer who purchased plates with undecorated centers and painted fake Oriental imitations of Western subjects in the centers. The 18th century Chinese decoration was fired at a much higher temperature than the modern forgery so its paint sunk into the glaze, and the two can be differentiated by careful visual inspection. -- AATA
