Abstract
Objects in the past excavated in wet conditions made of bamboo were left in water storage. This limited study and storage as well as transport of the objects. This paper reports research and experimentation into the dehydration of such objects and goes further than results already reported earlier in <i>Wenwu</i> (vol.4, 1979). Other participants in this study include Zhang Zinru and Lee Kongbi. The properties of waterlogged bamboo and the condition objects are usually found in are discussed including the types of objects and their respective historical periods. One method of treatment by dehydrachloride allows for controlled solidification without splitting or loss of shape, but treated objects are darker, fragile, and friable. Further experimentation resulted in a formula which resulted in elastic and less fragile objects: aqueous urea-formaldehyde resin 60% with ammonium chloride, polyvinyl alcohol solution 7%, polyvinyl acetate emulsion 30%, and glycol 3%. No loss of calligraphy on objects occurs. There is some slight shrinkage noted and the objects are darkened. Another method was developed using baths of alcohol followed by ether and then a bath of mastic-ether(30%). After one week the ether is allowed to evaporate. Breaks are repaired with a mixture of beeswax, resin, and mastic resin. Objects which were waterlogged, black, and rotten were clamped between glass and soaked in a bath of ethanol and then ether. The ether was allowed to evaporate and polyvinyl alcohol was then applied to both sides. A natural color was achieved with a degree of elasticity. Gum dammar and polybutyl methacrylate were also used. -- AATA
