Abstract
The articles, written to orient members of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts to the exhibit Problems in Connoisseurship and Conservation, describes approaches taken and techniques used to solve several conservation and authentication problems in the museum's collection, as well as the museum's philosophy towards conservation. The conservation of Nardo id Cione's 14th-century wood panel, Standing Madonna with child, 13 outlined from x-ray and ultraviolet photography, through cleaning, consolidation in painting and varnishing. Wet cleaning and repair of the museum's large tapestries are described. Thermoluminescence dating indicated the terracotta Head of a Woman thought perhaps a forgery was from about 400 BC. In contrast connoisseurship showed other museum pieces to be forgeries such as a prized 16th century ostrich egg which had had evidence of machine cutting on the screws. -- AATA
