Abstract
The article is written for non-conservation trained museum curators, technicians, and archaeologists who handle and study ceramic objects. A summary of common definitions is given, along with the composition and manufacturing characteristics of various types of ceramics. Several examples of recently excavated ceramic objects are illustrated. Guidelines for the care and handling are given for both archaeological and non-archaeological ceramics which are consistent with the minimum amount of intervention. Improper mending and reconstruction procedures and materials are listed in order to dispel erroneous conceptions. Storage and study instructions are given. See also AATA Vol. 21, Abstract No. 2361, PARIS No. 76448 for related discussion.
