The seminar concentrated on problems of selection for preservation, format, and usability of machine-readable records, and the options for media for preservation. Media included paper tape, punch cards, magnetic tape, magnetic disks, optical disks, and silver halide photographic reproduction. The volatility of many of these media is emphasized, e.g., reusable optical disks can be accidentally erased. There are also problems of compatibility and obsolescence of equipment. One solution is to construct a shell around the archive which effectively freezes the technological stage of the archive, while applying transformations to material from other sources so that they remain compatible.
