In order for ¹⁴C dating results to be fully integrated into archaeological works as a whole, it is necessary for the various functions of ¹⁴C dates within archaeological reasoning to be clearly and explicitly realized. This paper outlines some of those functions. Some are strictly related to chronology - providing an absolute time scale, establishing relative chronology, establishing correlations between archaeological sequences that are geographically separated, and for independent correlation of archaeologic sequences with environmental sequences. Other functions go beyond chronology. These include verification of typological or stratigraphic identifications, critical analysis of closed finds, assistance in establishing reliable typologies and stratigraphies, and monitoring long-term excavation projects. -- AATA
