The oval-shaped painting in the center of a silk banner appears to be oil paint on unprepared silk ground, lined with single weave linen and an aqueous adhesive. The surface is varnished. The painting was cut from the banner and faced with Japanese tissue paper and Acryloid B-72 in xylene plus Tergitol NonionicTMN as an emulsifier, and water. The lining was removed, the silk flattened and reinforced with tissue and adhesive layers. The painting was lined by hand ironing with wax-resin adhesive on a natural, fine-weave linen, leaving margins on the sides and bottom, and an area reaching to the top of the banner to support the weight of the painting behind the silk when rehung. The surface coating was softened by contact with acetone-soaked Japanese tissue covered with a sheet of Mylar to prevent evaporation and plexiglass for weight. The surface film shriveled and could be removed mechanically with a wooden spatula. The surface was evened with a hot blanket under vacuum pressure. The losses were filled with a chalk-gelatine luting and impregnated with wax-resin adhesive before inpainting with Magna paint. Additional treatment involving replacement in the silk banner is described.
