Abstract
Eight sources in the literature dating from 1681 to 1927 describe the physical properties of ivory. Techniques of bleaching, cutting, smoothing, and preparing the binding medium for the paper support are covered, as are the pigments used, and the equipment such as brushes, needles, palette knives, etc. Comparative tables of colors and palette range are included. Designs, underpainting, painting, and stippling are described. Then restoration methods are described as carried out on three ivory miniatures of the early 19th century at the Historical Museum of Vienna, including microscopic examination, flattening of warped pieces, glueing, fixing of colors, and retouching of losses. -- AATA
