Abstract
There are many cases where it is desirable to investigate the divestment of an image without physically modifying the artwork. An example might be to predict the appearance of a painting after removal of a brown oxidized varnish coating. Such a prediction may be of interent in deciding whether the painting should in fact be cleaned. In order to produce a divested image of the Mona Lisa a high resolution (12 mu m) 10 cm X 12.5 cm color transparency of the work was first digitized by means of a scanning microdensitometer. The digital data from the magnetic tape were then loaded into the IDIMS computer at the Scripps Satellite Remote Sensing Facility, and the image was recreated on the color monitor. Next the data were mathematically modified using the varnish PAS spectral function to produce a color-corrected or divested image.
