Abstract
During the 18th century, both original Chinese painted textiles and Western imitations of Chinese painted textiles were available. Various methods have been developed to distinguish between the two types. These include: width of textile (Chinese were wider); selvedge (Chinese always contrast in colour, sometimes also in weave); selvedge hoses (regular on Chinese) and fabric finish (softer on Chinese). The painting techniques and the pigments used were also different. XRF non-destructive analysis was used to identify the pigments, the differences found are tabulated. The Chinese also used silver outlines on the floral motifs. Photographs, tables, references. -- ICCROM
