Abstract
This is a survey of farm implements of iron from the Swedish Iron Age, as seen in a European context. In the early Iron Age the northern European usage of iron was far less common than in southern European agriculture. Only the sickle and the scythe with a short blade were made of iron. Around 500 A.D. a change occurred, and three major innovations were introduced: 1) a new type of sickle, more convenient for reaping cereals, came into use; 2) a scythe with a longer blade was developed; 3) the iron share, on the ard, was introduced. Particularly the iron share and the new type of scythe meant a major advancement for agri cultural production, but also an increase in the consumption of iron, and ca 1000 Sweden was on a par with the rest of Europe regarding the usage of iron in farming. -- AATA
