Abstract
Infrared and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the oxidation of Fe3O4 on pure iron, steel and non-ferrous surfaces, under simulated atmospheric conditions (water and sulphate solution). The Fe3O4 was unchanged on pure iron and non-ferrous substrates, but was converted to gamma-Fe OOH on steel. The proposed mechanism includes reduction of oxygen, and accounts for the nature of the substrate influencing the type of corrosion product formed. Raman spectra for iron, Fe3O4, gamma-Fe OOH and alpha-Fe OOH are given. -- AATA
