Abstract
The recovery of the Kogge, which took several years and had to be conducted partially with the help of a diving-bell ship, is described. 1400 square meters of river bottom could be examined under water. The recovered timbers of the ship were glued while wet and the Kogge was reconstructed at an R.H. of 100%. Now the object will be impregnated for several years with PEG in a large conservation basin. (Translator's Remark: Around 1200, a new type of large ship appeared which ruled the Nordic seas for nearly 2 centuries: the Kogge. There is no adequate English name for it, except the heraldic term lymphad, which denotes a specific form. It was this kind of ship that allowed the city league of the Hanso to attain its predominance in Northern Europe during the 13th and 14th centuries. In fact, this new type of ship revolutionized South European shipbuilding. R.W. -- AATA
