Mud slides which struck the ancient Ozette Indian village on the Washington coast; need for identification of wood genus before preservation; evaluation of the amount of decay affecting the waterlogged wood; variations of PEG concentration affecting preservation; heat affecting preservation; dehydration in PEG solution; problems of treating hardwoods with poly(ethylene glycol); pre-treatment with hydrochloric acid; solvent blend of dichloromethane, methanol and petroleum ether 1:1:1 for breaking down ancient polymerized oils; preservation times for thetimbers of the ship Wasa; effect of sulfate-producing bacteria; use of biocides in PEG solution; humidity control on drying after PEG treatment; dimensional stability after PEG treatment; and effect of water excavation techniques on waterlogged artifacts were discussed.
