After describing them in detail, as well as their method of manufacture, their state of conservation and former interventions, this article presents an account of the complete restoration, and of the problems of conservation in situ of the Vues d'Italie, grisaille wallpapers by Dufour and Leroy (1823) preserved at the Arco Palace, Mantua, Italy. The restorer acting in agreement with the Opificio delle Pietre Dure set out a unique methodology specifying at the outset basic criteria for the choice of materials, and the technique of assembly. The support selected for mounting was a synthetic polyester fabric, and two compound adhesives (Glutofix 600 and Plextol D 541); Velcro strips and wooden rods will be used to reposition the wallpapers thus mounted on the wall. The materials and techniques used insure the reversibility of the treatment; the original aspect of the wallpapers has been maintained; in the future constant surveillance will be exercised, and conservation will take place according to a regularly scheduled program as it is not possible to intervene on the Palace of Arco itself since it is a historical monument. The work is still underway; the reinstallation of the wallpapers in situ is presented as a project which will be completed by year end 1987 under the direction of the Soprintendenza ai Beni Artistici of Mantua, and in collaboration with the Arco Foundation. -- AATA
