Abstract
The Japanese technique for the decoration of fabric with stenciled motifs is called katazome. Detailed and illustrated instructions for every step of the process from the cutting of the paper stencil and the preparation of the resist paste used to block out areas of design during stages of the dyeing process, through the final rinsing of the completed fabric are given. The authors discuss traditional materials and tools, and provide a list of suppliers in Japan, the United States, Canada, and England, but also suggest non-traditional substitutes. All recipes are given in metric and avoirdupois measurements. -- AATA
