Abstract
Sulphur dioxide catalitic oxidation in aerosol or on the stone surface is the most probable mechanism in the formation of weathering crust in Venice. Bacteria of sulfur cycle were present in small number or absent in Venice in 1971 and 1972 so a biological process of deterioration is excluded.
