Abstract
This article is concerned with the potential high level of arsenic in the natural history collection on display at the Park Museum in Banff, Alberta (Canada). Samples were taken to measure these levels, and precautions were taken during the surface cleaning of the specimens. The team members are named. Protective wear consisted of Tyvek® (spun-bond polyethylene) body suits and boots, surgical gloves, masks, and air testing pumps. Dust removal was accomplished with paint brushes, vacuum cleaners, cotton swabs, scaffolding, and ladders. Air quality analysis proved that the air was well within current health standards. Analysis of samples collected on the surface of specimens confirmed that one quarter of the specimens tested high for arsenic. These arsenic-contaminated specimens were equally furred or feathered and not necessarily old (pre-1950s); for example two contaminated specimens dated from the 1980s. Many of the older specimens tested negative. Protective wear will continue to be used in the future during handling and cleaning of the collection. -- AATA
