Abstract
The painting March 30, 1959 by Canadian abstract artist Gordon Rayner was treated in the conservation laboratory of the Winnipeg Art Gallery in preparation for its display and travel as part of the exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Canada in the fall of 1992. The painting was obscured by dirt and smoke; the cotton muslin was yellowed, embrittled, and weakened along the edges; part of the tacking edge was missing; the paint layer was cracked and had suffered losses. A synthetic resin adhesive was bled into the cracks to consolidate the paint layer. The tacking edges were reinforced with strips of white polyester fabric adhered to the reverse. A small piece of canvas was inserted in the area of loss on the tacking edge. Grime was removed with an aqueous cleaning solution applied locally with cotton swabs. The painting was remounted on a new stretcher, loose-lined, inpainted, and fitted with a backing board. -- AATA
