There have been descriptions in the literature about a dozen Parthian or Sassanian finds consisting, in general, of earthenware containers sealed with bitumen and having bronze or copper rolls or cylinders inside (the so-called Baghdad batteries). The author asks the question: could these devices have been galvanic cells used to electroplate bronze with gold and silver? The authors' answer is no; they were rather used in the practice of magic.
