Abstract
Raw cotton contains iron compounds that are potentially active catalysts. Although the total content of these impurities decreases with processing, significant damage is still possible, depending more on distribution than on content. For example, localized damage is found to occur during peroxide bleaching of cotton from rotor spun yarns due to an unequal distribution of the iron compounds. The pH of the bleaching solution was adjusted to minimize this damage.
