Abstract
The commercial success of chrome tanning was achieved in the early 1890's in the kidskin industry of the Philadelphia area by a group of leather tradesmen, operating as the Tannage Patent Company, based on the Augustus Schultz United States Patents granted in 1884 for the two-bath method of chrome tanning. This paper focuses on the profound effect ot had upon the productivity of the local industry; the ensuing universal acceptance of chrome leather; the revolutionizing of the light-leather industry; and the creditability of leather chemistry and technology. A chronology of chrome tanning is reviewed.
