Abstract
Fragments of ceramics used in the foundry excavated below Phidias' workshop at Olympia, Greece, were analyzed chemically and mineralogically. Local clays had been used for the molds and crucibles as well as for the statues'cores. Different types of clays were used for preparing the outer shell used in the lost wax process.
