Abstract
After trying several other methods the Drew University Archaeological Institute adopted an electrolytic process to clean heavily corroded bronze coins and other small bronze artifacts excavated at Caesarea, Israel. The method used a 2% solution of sodium hydroxide as the electrolyte, the artifacts as cathode, a stainless steel anode and 950 milliamps of direct current. The treatment destroyed 26.2% of the coins treated.
