This paper briefly reviews the literature on the history of wire making and discusses both the archaeological and historical evidence for the date of the introduction of the draw-plate. It is concluded that only a microscopic examination of surviving wire will solve this question, and the paper goes on to describe the characteristics of hand-made wire, as a basis for the future study of existing wire from antiquity. -- AATA
