Abstract
The clay fraction of an Attic soil was fired at lte 1100° and the trans formations induced were studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy. The unfired clay contained Fe in the form of small particles of Á8-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and Ê3-FeOOH and as a substitutional ion in the clay mineral structure. Ê3-FeOOH trans formed to Á8-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> at 200-400° and the clay mineral hydroxylated at 500800°. A disintegration of the clay mineral structure was noticed above 800°, followed by recrystallization in an Fe-rich phase, probably as very fine particles. The room temperature spectra of the fired samples indicated that an increase in particle size of the oxides occurred on firing. -- AATA
