Abstract
Presents a method of lacquer identification based on infrared spectrometry. Hardened lacquer films show characteristic infrared absorption bands. The bands at 1065, 1430-1465, 2850, 2925 and 3400CM-<sub>1</sub> do not vary much among lacquers of various sources, but those at 993CM-<sub>1</sub> and 1595-1720CM-<sub>1</sub> vary in shape depending upon the source, age and history of the lacquer.
