Historical and present coloring techniques are reviewed. The latter include water-borne, alcohol-, glycol-, hydrocarbonand varnish-based stains. The coloring system may be synthetic dyes, synthetic or natural pigments dissolved or dispersed in the media. The properties and suitability of the materials for indoor and outdoor use are indicated. -- AATA
