Abstract
Many polychrome wooden sculptures in the Edo period are coated with thick undercoats of shell white in animal glue. This type of color layer is not stable and often peels off. It has been a custom to repaint the polychrome sculptures because of the difficulty of consolidation. This paper reports a new mixture of solvents for applying Paraloid B 72 in p-xylen (nonpolar solvent). It was diluted to 25-30% by adding ethyl alcohol (polar solvent). The solution becomes tacky more rapidly than the same solution in a nonpolar solvent. Several minutes after injection of the solution, it can be tacky enough for reattaching thick paint and the shell white layer. A wooden sculpture owned by Jokoji temple, Katsushika, Tokyo, was repaired by this method. -- AATA
