Initially focuses upon the North Country tradition of chair-making and particularly on the stylistic tradition of Lancashire spindle-back chairs. Within this tradition, examines the contents of the Mark Chippendale (1815) deposition (catalogue no. QSP 1813, Lancashire Record Office, Preston). The documentary evidence supplied by the deposition includes a detailed and hitherto undocumented account of the contents of a chair-maker's workshop, including lists of tools, devices, and timbers. The specific qualities of the deposition allow many avenues of enquiry, including, for example, speculations related to the power sources for certain tools, levels of mechanization, types of timber used, ancillary trade work undertaken, relationship of this chair-maker with certain other tradesmen, the workshnp division of labor, and values of stock-in-trade. -- AATA
