Report of the examination and analysis of a Maori model canoe from the new ethnography gallery at Saffron Walden Museum. Problems of interpretation concerning ethnographic material are illustrated. X-ray fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy were used to identify the nature of the paints. The conservation treatments are described briefly.
