Describes the complicated problems connected with a recent attempt to restore one of the most important Polish national monuments, a panorama. After a survey of panorama conservation, discusses the state of the Polish panorama (ca. 115 x 14 meters), which called for new solutions technically as well as in the restoration. After stabilizing the entire picture, the conservators retouched the missing sections of the painting. Presently the finishing work is being carried out, which will be topped off by a final protective coat of mat Lascaux transparent acrylic varnish 575. While the restoration work was still in progress, the technical requisites in the foreground were reconstructed which, together with the lighting system, consisting of a dome skylight and a reflex canvas, are crucial for the illusionistic overall effect giving the viewer on the middle platform the impression he is in the center of the events. In the first panoramas, the requisites were usally placed on scaffolding between the picture and the viewer platform. Natural material, earth, stones, grass, bushes, trees, etc., augmented in battle panoramas with military objects, weapons, etc., were used for their construction. It was vital that the requisites were a logical continuation of the painting. See also AATA 21-1951.
