Abstract
Materials used for the conservation treatment and storage of archaeological metal objects in the Agora Excavations since 1931 are reviewed. The current condition of copper alloy and lead objects is examined with regards to these materials. Materials used in the past have contributed to the deterioration of many artifacts. An attempt is made to correlate deterioration and corrosion products with treatment and storage materials. The identification of the conservation materials and the corrosion products aids the conservation staff today in the re-treatment and storage of the artifacts. The corrosion products and organic coatings of a few lead and copper alloy objects have been analyzed by XRD and FTIR. The identification of lead carbonate and copper coumpounds indicates the corrosive effects of acetic acid emissions from wooden storage materials.
