Catalog for the first international loan exhibition devoted to Watteau. Two chapters describe restoration of Watteau's works. The first, The Restoration of the Pilgrimage to the Island of Cythera, by Ségolène Bergeon and Lola Faillant-Dumas (restoration conducted by Jacques Roullet), suggests the major restoration problem was in thinning the many coats ofthick brown varnish made with a mastic resin base. This process confirmed the excellent condition of the work even in the areas where one expected problems. X-radiography revealed the excellence of Watteau's technique. The major discovery of treatment was of the brightness and range of Watteau's colors. The second restoration chapter, The Examination and Treatment of Watteau's Italian Comedians, pp. 465-467, by Sarah L. Fisher describes the treatment at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, in removing the varnish and extensive overpainting and the subsequent inpainting of the losses. -- AATA
